The Gifts of Time and Appreciation

Coming out of a local store, I recognized a woman who was a part of my church. I had not been her Pastor for very long but I knew her from years gone by.  She had a look of desperation on her face and obviously needed some help. I spent part of the afternoon with her, helping her with some very urgent issues. Its always a labor of love to help someone who is struggling. I believe it truly sets up blessing in our lives. When we were done I was amazed that so much time had gone by. It seemed like moments and yet it was hours. After our time together was over that day I took a look at her again. Her whole face had changed from desperation to relaxation. It’s like she could breathe again. Sometimes resuscitation is not mouth to mouth but heart to heart. As I walked her to her car she turned around to look a me as she opened the door. With tears in her eyes she said, …

Healing and Restoration Through Memory

I will always cherish the moments my mother would bring me grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup when I was sick as a little girl. She would tuck me into bed during the day, put a little black and white television in my room next to me and bring me my comfort food with a little glass of apple juice on a tray. All day, my job was to get better. I watched old black and white episodes of “I love Lucy” and anything else that came on after that. Every now and then I would drift into a deep sleep and wake feeling much better. Sometimes Mom would bring me hot chocolate or some tea with sugar in it to soothe my throat or whatever else was bothering me. They were not medicine in the form of pills but they healed because love was in the giving of them and the receiving of them. Sometimes on lazy Saturday afternoons I would wander into the spare room where the sun was shining brightly on the …

“First Do No Harm” and Modern Medicine

When I was growing up, my family had this person in our lives we called “the family physician.” We all went to him and he knew us all by name. I was not always keen on our family physician’s bedside manner, as he could almost sound a bit insulting. He knew his stuff though. I remember my father calling him brilliant one Christmas holiday he saved my grandmother’s life. She went on to live many many years longer, even with heart issues, and well after our doctor’s retirement. He treated my chicken pox, strep throat, allergies, severe reactions to antibiotics, and diagnosed my first pregnancy. I saw him into my early 20’s from when I was a child. Everything that could have been known about me medically, he knew. He treated everything, including some of my tears. Now, we have a “primary care physician.” We are very fortunate when we get a good one. I know there are a lot of good ones out there. Although, what happens now, our insurance company pretty much determines …

Reiki Healing and Christianity

In my current research I have found more and more medical professionals are recognizing the value of Reiki in healing ailments. Counselors and therapists are recognizing the value of Reiki healing for their patients with anxiety, depression, and emotional scars from the past. The one area that is now beginning to see the value in Reiki is in within the realm of religion and belief. Those of the Christian faith often struggle with the question as to whether Reiki is right for them or not. Yet, most Christians accept medication for mental illnesses and physical problems. Also, where would we be if individuals were not trained as surgeons when an appendix is about to burst? Regardless of religious belief, an appendectomy can save someone’s life! At some point in history Christianity has learned to accept that sometimes God heals through the hands of a surgeon, or medications and other scientific means. More Christian believers are beginning to see the value of Reiki as a great addition to their healing process; body, mind, and spirit. Reiki …

Weekly Wisdom: Mastering Calm in the Storm. “Peace be still.”

Have you ever experienced a natural calm during a time of challenge or disaster? Our bodies create this calm in order to help us see a situation clearly and deal with it quickly and efficiently. It truly is quite a miracle! I know I have felt this sudden calm during some of the most difficult times in my life so I know it first hand. It’s obtainable and available when we need it. What we often don’t realize is it’s also available any other time too. This wonderful calm is like when Jesus commanded the waves of the sea to become still. His utterance, “Peace, be still” is almost like an affirmation He put out to create the environment He wanted all to witness. The disciples were in a boat filled with fear, panic and anxiety. We know this could only create more of the same. Jesus had to change the state of the situation by calming the sea so they could see more clearly. They were never in danger, but they perceived they were. …

Truth About Energy Healing, Light, and the Body, Mind, Emotion Connection (Part 2 of a Series)

Let There Be Light!  Take your finger and put it on your forehead between the eyebrow area. Deeper inside this area in your head is a gland called the pineal gland. (Eastern culture calls this area the third eye.) This little wonder creates the neurotransmitters serotonin and melatonin. Serotonin is sort of the feel good neurotransmitter. It helps to regulate mood, sexual desire, digestion, memory and sleep. Melatonin helps with the sleep and waking cycles within your body. Without balanced quantities of these amazing little guys, our bodies get out of whack. We can become depressed, not sleep right, have memory issues and more. For such a little gland, the pineal gland carries a lot of importance, and guess what? It is benefited by SUNLIGHT. Taking in natural sunlight into the eyes is very important because this helps stimulate this amazing little gland, and will benefit the brain and mood. I read once that the pineal gland has some similar tissues as the retina of the eyes. Basically without natural sunlight we are not balanced, …

Truth About Energy Healing, Light, and the Body, Mind, Emotion Connection (Part 1 of a Series)

Quite a few years ago I became interested in energy medicine after the loss of my son. I still can’t believe that it has been 20 years now! Understanding how I was going to get through the rest of my life was a challenge. Grief is such a hard thing to handle when it is as intense as losing a child. The effects of prolonged grief on the body and emotions can be devastating. I wondered if I was ever going to make it through it all. Obviously I did! I prayed a lot during that time, talked to God, and did a whole lot of crying. The depth of crying of a mother who has lost a child is unlike any other. It’s like it comes from a deeper place than we ever expected existed. Believe me, it’s there. I found that depth during that time and I found God presence too. I also discovered energy healing. I began with an interest in Reiki which means “God’s Wisdom” and “life force energy.” It is …
